Continuing the tradition of the Jordan River Arts Council, East Jordan, Michigan, to showcase fiber art, Spaces Uncharted will build on the foundation laid by the Rare Threads series. This show is an opportunity to expand on the notion of the breadth and depth of contemporary fiber art. By highlighting Michigan artists working in the realm of fiber art, we hope to challenge the viewer to see fiber and fiber methods in new ways. Curators Shanna Robinson and Nancy McRay, both fiber artists working in Northern Michigan. Robinson is Professor of Art at NCMC in Petoskey. McRay is teaching weaving through NMC, Interlochen and BlackBird Arts.
The participating artists, Jill Ault, Barbara Bushey, Susie Krage, Nancy McRay, Leon Nash, Marilyn Prucka, Shanna Robinson, Dolores Slowinski, and Sherri Smith were chosen because we know and admire their work. Our chosen theme is in response to a common thread running through each artist’s work; an expression of their relationship with issues of space. Inner, outer, urban, or watery, these artists interact with and illustrate spaces all around us. We hope viewers will find their ideas about fibers, textile methods, and the world around them will be broadened and enriched.
Spaces Uncharted runs from October 14 through November 11. The opening reception is Sunday October 14 from 1-4 p.m. with a gallery talk by Dolores Slowinske at 2:00. Shanna Robinson, Marilyn Prucka and Nancy McRay will give a gallery talk about their work at 2:00 on Sunday November 4 at 2:00.
